What's this all about?

Well "The Crabtree Society" was formed in November 2006 by myself William Anthony Protheroe, for a small group of my fishing friends, based in the South Wales area. We tend to use items of antique tackle, when fishing for a wide variety of freshwater fish, on rivers, lakes and canals.

Our trips are roughly based around the classic book "Mr Crabtree Goes Fishing." As a boy I read this book over and over! Written and illustrated by Bernard Venables, it was first published in 1949 and was compiled from a series of weekly cartoon strips, he produced for the Daily Mirror newspaper where he worked as a reporter.

In the book, Mr Crabtree wears a brimmed hat and is never seen without a pipe jutting out from his mouth. He is accompanied on these fishing trips by his young son Peter, who in all weathers fished in short trousers, gumboots and a tie.

Members are known by their nicknames, such as "Man In A Sidecar!" It's a funny old World is'nt it?
